Wheatley Open Space is a 105-acre property acquired by Pitkin County in January 2015. Located at the lower end of Snowmass Canyon and traversed by the Roaring Fork River and the Rio Grande Trail, as well as Lower River Road, the property fulfills many elements of the Open Space and Trails mission: preservation of wildlife habitat, recreational access, preservation of local agriculture, and scenic view plane protection.
A management plan for this open space was adopted by the Open Space and Trails Board on Dec. 3, 2015. It is posted below.
Wheatley Gulch, accessed via the open space, is closed annually from Nov. 15 through April 30 to protect wildlife. The Rio Grande Trail through Wheatley, as well as the beach access, are closed to dogs during the same time period.
