Pitkin County Open Space and Trails has launched an online, interactive map of areas trails and other outdoor amenities - at www.pitkinoutside.com. The website and an accompanying mobile app, developed by San Francisco-based GreenInfo Network, allows users to search local recreational opportunities, including hiking and biking trails, via a computer or smart device. Users are able to consult downloaded maps when there is no cell phone or internet service available.
The Etkin Family Fund at the Aspen Community Foundation donated $28,000 for this project, which mapped not only county amenities, but those in the city of Aspen, Snowmass Village, Basalt and on adjacent national forest and Aspen Skiing Co. lands.
The system allows desktop computer users to choose between satellite and topographic base maps and search for parks, trailheads, fishing easements, points of interest and more. Users are also able to export a GPS file of any trail or print a PDF map. The mobile app allows map downloads for use when a user is out of cell range.
