CONSTRUCTION UNDERWAY AT NORTH LOT, THE BEACH
Frontier Paving Inc. has been contracted to construct modifications to the parking/pullout areas at North Star Nature Preserve. Construction is underway at the North Lot and the Beach. The South Gate lot has temporarily reopened.

The project is intended to provide efficient parking at the Preserve, and improve vehicular and pedestrian safety. The changes will require realignment of the East of Aspen Trail is some areas, asphalt/gravel resurfacing, fence installation, buffers from the highway and, where appropriate, striping to designate parking spaces. Improvements will be made at South Gate, the North Lot, the Beach and the take-out at the Stillwater pedestrian bridge.

Work is expected to occur in spring, between May 1 and June 23, and in the fall, between Aug. 28 and Oct. 10.

the trail may be closed at one time. Trail users will be detoured onto the Hwy. 82 shoulder. Periodic lane closures on Hwy. 82 between the Take-out and South Gate are also anticipated.

Before the design of the project, Pitkin County Open Space and Trails secured a lease from the Colorado Department of Transportation for a defined portion of the Hwy. 82 right-of-way adjacent to North Star Nature Preserve. It gives OST the ability to manage public uses and related facilities within the ingress/egress to the Preserve. See the North Star Parking Improvements Planset (above) for more information about the project as it has been designed.
