TAKE-OUT CLOSED FOR RECONSTRUCTION Work on the takeout parking, near the North Star pedestrian bridge, began Sept. 6. The takeout remains closed to all use; the East of Aspen Trail is open through the area. River users are advised to use South Gate as both the put-in and takeout.
The South Gate, Beach and North lots have already been reconstructed this summer.
The revamping of North Star access and parking areas is intended to provide efficient parking at the Preserve, and improve vehicular and pedestrian safety. The changes required realignment of the East of Aspen Trail in some areas. The trail is now separated from parking areas along North Star. Those seeking parking will find areas newly resurfaced with asphalt or gravel, buffers from the highway at the Beach and South Gate, parking stops more clearly delineated parking spaces. Parking at the Beach and South Gate is now one way in and one way out; do not block entrance and exit areas.
Before the design of the project, Pitkin County Open Space and Trails secured a lease from the Colorado Department of Transportation for a defined portion of the Hwy. 82 right-of-way adjacent to North Star Nature Preserve. It gave OST the ability to manage public uses and related facilities within the ingress/egress to the Preserve. See the North Star Parking Improvements Planset (above) for more information about the project as it was been designed.
