Brush Creek Park & Ride to AABC Trail Community Engagement and Analysis Initiative

Pitkin County Open Space and Trails, City of Aspen Parks and Open Space and the Elected Officials Transportation Committee are assessing the feasibility of connecting the Brush Creek Park and Ride and Aspen Airport Business Center via a trail. An engineering feasibility study was completed in February of 2022 that looked at all feasible alignment options (see the Trail Alignment Analysis fact sheet below for a summary of the analysis). The study resulted in a preferred alternative and projected the project costs between $20 million to $25 million. . The new trail would also provide access to the Rio Grande Trail and greater trail network.

This summer, the project team engaged the community through an online survey and other outreach efforts to collect feedback from a variety of stakeholders to determine the level of support and desire from the community regarding a potential trail connecting these two destination points. This effort concluded in early August

Next, the team will report on outcomes and provide a technical analysis regarding the cost-benefit of the trail and summarize the level of support for the project.

The purpose of the outreach initiative was to:
  • collect specific feedback from a variety of stakeholders resulting in an understanding of the level the support for this trail project
  • explore and resolve key trail project themes for decision making
  • review and present outreach feedback from a variety of engagement opportunities
The goals of this project are to:
  • evaluate the costs and benefits of this potential trail connection
  • understand the level of community support for additional connectivity between Brush Creek Park and Ride and the Aspen Airport Business Center
  • gauge who would be the potential trail users and if there are opportunities to decrease vehicle trips
  • document the range of perspectives about the investment in a new trail connecting Brush Creek Park and Ride and Aspen Airport Business Center
  • gauge how addressing these connections between the Brush Creek Park & Ride and the AABC support community goals

Fact Sheet: Trail Alignment Analysis
Six potential trail alignments were studied to determine the best connection between the Brush Creek Park & Ride and the AABC. The primary goal was to propose a trail that would safely and efficiently connect the two locations while minimizing total elevation change and ideally meet ADA requirements. Find out more about the analysis of potential alignments with the fact sheet below.

Conceptual Renderings of the Twin Bridges Alignment and Hwy. 82 Alignment
Download the presentation below to view conceptual bridge images of the Twin Bridges Alignment and images of the Hwy. 82 bridge option. The Twin Bridge Alignment (Option I in the Feasibility Study) includes two new bridges that span the Roaring Fork River. The bridge locations were selected as result of how the bridge would look against the natural topography, the trail grade and the bridge span length across the Roaring Fork River. To minimize the bridge span length, both bridges are placed perpendicular to the Roaring Fork River in locations where the gorge narrows.

Learn about the Twin Bridges Alignment
The trail feasibility study considered a number of trail alignments. Considering the feasibility, cost, public safety and phasing, the “Twin Bridges Alignment” is considered the most viable option. Download the feasibility study and/or the study summary below.
